Would you be able to wait 20 years for the kitchen remodel of your dreams? One homeowner did!
With the many exciting new developments going on in Bossier City like the downtown redevelopment project, Walker Place Park and the possibility of Walker Place coming to fruition, South Bossier is becoming a desirable setting for families to set roots. With so many new added amenities in the near future and Shreveport shopping and dining just over the bridge, homeowners are investing in their homes by updating their kitchens, bathrooms and adding square footage and staying put.
This particular remodeling call started with our client’s adult daughter wanting to make sure her mother, who has waited 20 years for a kitchen remodel, was going to connect with a company who was not only going to treat her with the utmost care, but who had the expertise and vision to redesign her dated, cramp kitchen space. I felt completely honored to receive the call.
When I first saw this circa 1960 Shady Grove kitchen, I knew we had a challenge on our hands. It was very tight quarters as you can see.
The lady of the house explained that her home was the hub for holidays and family gatherings and although she had a list of must haves, she was going to leave the style, new design layout, and color scheme up to me. No pressure here right?
Let’s take a look at her must haves:
Get rid of the peninsula and the upper cabinets.
Add a butcher block island just big enough for her to sit and prep food.
Relocate the microwave and oven to a wall and add a pantry.
Relocate the annoying bulky refrigerator.
Extend the kitchen to make it feel larger and open.
But the best request was… she needed a “two butt” kitchen.
Her husband explained that they were tired of the kitchen being so tight that two people could not pass through without bumping into one another. The more I listened and got to know this family, I quickly realized we all were going to have a lot of fun working together on this project.
They also mentioned that this was eventually going to be their forever retirement home and they wanted it to be beautiful and unique. The more I listened, the more my creative design juices flowed and I couldn’t wait to get started.
With all the necessary questions answered, it was time to get to work. Let’s take a look at the new floorplan I created for them which gave them extra storage and plenty of space to entertain. They gave it two thumbs up!
We thoroughly discussed colors, and materials and style until I believed I had a new design that they would love. I presented them with two different 3D design renderings. The first was option was two toned cabinets with the bottom cabinets stained a walnut color and the second option was also two toned cabinets with the lowers painted a gray/blue color but with a stained wood vent hood. As you can see below, they chose the painted option and I was so happy they did.
I presented them with a bold Spanish influence black and white tile behind the cooktop. They luh-huved it!
The final result was spot on and even better than they ever imagined! Take a look at the before and after pictures!
That annoying peninsula and upper cabinets.
The peninsula is long gone giving way for this beautiful walnut butcher block island. Two toned colored cabinets compliment the warm woods which also make the white cabinets pop! The homeowner got her wall oven, microwave and pantry. Check, check, check and check!
The dining room and kitchen are closed off from each other.
The entire space feels open and much bigger with the peninsula gone and the pantry wall extended into the dining room.
Are you loving the dining room table and home decor you see? Don’t worry, we will let you know where it all comes from and how you can score these beauties and more at the end of this article!
That dividing wall does not allow near enough room for comfortable cooking.
Removing the wall let us extend the the cooking area giving the clients more countertop space and extra cabinets. It also allowed for us to relocate the refrigerator on that wall. The island is exactly what the lady of the house wanted with plenty of drawers for her cooking pots and mixing bowls. The recessed lighting really brightens the entire room. And how about that vent-hood, Spanish influence tile and pendant lights? Que bella!
Another tight area was the sink side. The BIG bulky refrigerator stood out like a sore thumb.
With the refrigerator relocated, there is more space to the left of the sink. And check out the amount of space between the island and the oven. I thing two butts can comfortably pass by each other don’t you?
We created this little nook for the gorgeous buffet which is perfect serving area for entertaining. Again, we carried the Spanish influence backsplash to this area which the clients absolutely love.
No more single butt kitchen here. Our clients can fit plenty of fannies in their one of kind custom kitchen remodel located in South Bossier City and they are ready to entertain their hearts out.
